Project 4Real:
4 Projects-4 Objectives-4 The Real World

If there’s one thing most schools fail to provide their students, it’s REAL WORLD skills.

From balancing a check book and running a business, to preparing meals and changing oil:
Most high school students enter the workforce with little of the life and professional skills
they need to survive.

“Project: 4Real”, an afterschool program funded through the Ralph C. Wilson Jr. Foundation and Generator Z, provides students ages 12-18 with career and life training through simple projects. Project: 4Real focuses on helping students grasp four key concepts:
• Financial Literacy
• Business Management
• Life Skills
• & Teamwork.

These four objectives are achieved by rotating students through a set of four project-based programs:

By narrowing down to four project areas and four sets of outcomes, students will be better prepared for their future while still remaining engaged. All programs will be helmed by instructors with backgrounds in industry and education, who will
provide not only support but real-world experience and family-like atmosphere. Each project area will have a specific class day when students will meet, and be socially distanced with sneeze shields, sanitizing stations, and temperature checks on-site.

In all four project areas, students will be assigned a specific project centered on delivering a unique financial, business, social, and personal challenge. Students will overcome each challenge

• By implementing budgets
• Using simple business strategies
• Working as a team
• & Using various trade skills that aren’t just for careers

These projects include:
• Working on Professional Show + Race Cars for Shows + Competitions
• Preparing Meals for The Inaugural DRIVE One Iron-Chef Cook-Off
• Creating a Innovative and Cost-Effective New Product
• & Customizing a 1/10 R/C Car for the DRIVE One E-Grand Prix

In the end, students will not only walk away with a memorable experience, but a background in
business, the knowledge to be financial responsible, and the skillset to be professionally and socially independent.

Program One-Auto Tech:

Automotive Service is no longer a dirty job: it’s a high-paying career path with unlimited possibilities! Whether you choose to be an technician or not, the automobile remains a pivotal and ever-changing part of our lives, which is why high school students need to understand the basics of automotive technology. Whether your vehicle requires a certain type of brake pad or motor oil, as the owner and driver, it’s up to you to know the difference and perform maintenance. That’s where Project: 4Real helps!

PROJECT(S):
Students will work on three types of project cars and attend competitions where said project competes.

These events will be:

A Drag Racing Event @ Lapeer Dragway
The GoodGuys PPG Nationals
& A Race at Birch Run Motor Speedway

4REAL LESSONS:
Financial Literacy
Students will learn what it takes to purchase a car, the role of Credit, and the cost it takes to maintain a vehicle (ex: Brake Pads, Coolant, Ball Joints, etc.)

BUSINESS MANAGEMENT:
Entrepreneurship

If you can’t envision working in a cubicle or under a difficult boss, you’re in-luck! Students will work alongside various mechanics and shop owners and have opportunities to learn under folks who built a career THEIR WAY!

TEAMWORK:
Everywhere a project car competes, students will work as a “Pit Crew”, answering questions to car-show attendees, performing simple maintenance, and even serving as a REAL PIT CREW during the CRA Race.

Program Two-Culinary:

While many life skills are essential, it can be argued that none are more important than knowing how to cook. The Culinary Arts can provide a career path into food service, restaurant management, and more. But more important than using your baking skills to be on the Food Network is using those skills simply to become independent. Project: 4Real’s Culinary program puts focus on helping students develop their independence... and a killer Chicken Parm.

PROJECT(S):
Students will create a 7-8 week Meal Plan. They’ll then comparison shop the necessary ingredients for each week, prepare them, and upon completion take it home for their families. At the end of the 8 week session, students will compete in the 1st Annual DRIVE One Iron Chef Cook-Off.

4REAL LESSONS:
Financial Literacy

Students will have a budget in their Meal Plan and comparison shop for ingredients each week.

BUSINESS MANAGEMENT:

Supply Chain Management

What Makes McDonalds successful? How About P.F. Changs? Each week, students will learn how successful restaurant chains find the middle ground between good food and a affordable price, and learn the basics of restaurant management.

TEAMWORK:

During the Cook-Off, students will be assigned to teams of two-to-three students. They’ll then have to decide on a dish, and work together to complete it for the judges in a short time span.

Tuesdays:

4-8pm

TBD

Program Three-Design + Fab:

Everything you use started as an idea in someone’s head. From your phone to your shoelaces, the items that save us time and bring us joy all started with an idea and a team to execute it. To change the world around you, you must understand the process it takes for an idea to become a reality: fundamental design, functionality, construction, production, and the cost entailed. While we all can’t be Steve Jobs, students in Project: 4Real’s Design & Fabrication program will get the introduction to product development that Apple’s Founder didn’t have.

PROJECT(S):
Students will team-up to create three low-cost, time-saving products from cheap and effective materials. They’ll then design a product around that idea using Photoshop & Clay Sculpting before bringing their idea to life through machining and fabrication technologies.

4REAL LESSONS:
Financial Literacy

Students will find and use low-cost BUT effective materials to create a prototype product, and account for wide-scale production cost

BUSINESS MANAGEMENT:

Product Development

What do new iPhones, Xboxes, and Dodge Chargers have in common? They all go through various stages of development before they’re launched. Students will learn and even go through these stages, including concept design, engineering, manufacturing, and initial roll-out.

TEAMWORK:

Each project will have a “Dream Team” behind it, with students making important production and design decisions as a collective group.

Program Four-R/C Robotics:

Robots are Taking-Over The World: Seriously! In 30 years, electronics have gone from playing VCRs and Cassettes, to powering our households and producing the goods we use everyday. Robots may seem complicated at first. But the same thing that makes Alexa play Tupac also turns the light on in your room, and Project: 4Real will gladly introduce you him: his name is ELECTRICITY!

PROJECT(S):
Students will purchase a 1/10 Scale Traxxas Remote Control Kit. They will then tear-it-down and purchase motors, batteries, and more to capture the Inaugural DRIVE One E-Grand Prix Title.

4REAL LESSONS:
Financial Literacy

Students will have a budget of $350 to spend on both mechanical and exterior upgrades, but will have to chose between spending more on appearance or performance.

BUSINESS MANAGEMENT:

Product Development

Workforce: The Heartbeat of America isn’t a Chevy, but the men and women (and soon Robots) who provide the goods and services that keep our world turning. How much does it cost to produce something when done by hand at an hourly rate? Why do we still need people to do the work that a robot can do? The answer to both will surprise you.

TEAMWORK:

Each R/C will have its own “Race Team”, making the difficult decisions such as “can we afford that upgrade?” and “what color should it be?”
